LOS ANGELES, CA – This week Neilsen Soundscan reported 2009 sales statistics for CDs and digital downloads. Digital album sales rose 16%, CD sales were down 18%, and vinyl sales were up 33% (!) over 2008 levels.

But in the biggest bright spot in the industry, Bob Nielson (no relation) reported sales of Uzi-shaped USB Flash drives were up more than 1000% and growing. Released October 27th by Tokyo Sex Whale Records via GetBusyCommittee.com, the Uzis, pre-loaded with Get Busy Committee’s album Uzi Does It, has been selling consistently and the site has had trouble keeping up with demand. “We originally manufactured 1200 USB Uzis,” commented Tokyo Sex Whale Records principal Apathy, “now we have less than 50 in stock and are scrambling to manufacture more.” “If the industry can see such a huge jump in just one format in just the last two months of 2009,” added Tokyo Sex Whale’s co-head Ryu, “imagine what the rest of 2010 is going to look like. This could be the year of the USB Uzi just as 1988 was the year of the cassette.”

The success has been so encouraging Tokyo Sex Whale and Get Busy Committee are planning another, even more limited, unique and eye-popping release later this week. Stay tuned and sign up to the email list below for updates.
